As with any project once the design is on its way we start with the wood.
Tabletop layout selection is always one of those areas which takes a lot longer than you think it's going to. In this case, there was not much room in the budget for alternative material so the selection was made slightly easier.
The trick was blending the visual outlier into the whole.
Next step was the glue up, curing and shaping. Keeping special care in the Domino locations to make sure they did not interfere with the shaping
namely height (in relation to the tapered shape of the tabletop, and the milled slots in the bottom) and in length ( in relation to cutting the circular shape).
The next part was a bit of a failure, I attempted to shape it on the bandsaw using the center of rotation. However, the support side of the machine was unstable, causing the blade to bind. Ultimately, the shaping was completed with a jigsaw.
Once the rough shape was cut out i could build a router sled to cut out the general shape.
Tip: I used a large bearing-guided router bit, which made it really easy to measure the hole location on the sled. Just knock a steel ruler up against the bearing and mark out the radius.

Next, we work on the taper. the design called for an edge of 35 mm, so the taper will go from 50 mm in the center to 35 at the edge
In order to keep the visual edge consistent with the top I again, used the router sled to carve away a stepped pattern. carving the remainder with a hand plane.
